Default HID in non-HID housings

Was looking at the difference between the halogen housings and the d2r equipped housings that come optional. I have seen that the back is different, but I cant tell nor have experience wether the reflectors have changed. I have a set of 2 ballasts and am ready to pick up a few D2R bulbs. Does anyone have any info? Does anyone know what kind of D2R's are needed?

It would greatly help out if you tell us which year ES you're inquiring about.

The 2000 ES is the first year where HID is a factory option. D2R is the only bulb type compatible with the HID headlamps on the ES.

Cool

You'll be blinding the **** out of people. Don't put HID's in non HID housings unless you can modify them to work. Early ES projectors glare, but are easily fixed by cutting the stock lens out & moving it away from the bulb, or shimming the lens out.

There will be no way to control the light output on your reflective housings. If you do it, you should be shot.

That being said... You can get some nice HID projectors and put them in your headlights.

Ive done 3 retro's and thanks for the help again boys and girls. I was just wondering like D2S projector housings on the US BMW E39 can accept HID and non-HID type bulbs. Thanks for the help unless none of you really know if the 00-01 reflectors are the same as the "HID" based 00-01 reflectors. I can just do a cutout instead.

I'm glad I read this thread. I just got my HIDs in the mail yesterday. Is there a DIY thread for HID's in non-HID housing?

very true, hid add ons aren't very bright either. Sometimes blind oncoming drivers too, cuz the beam patterns are all messy.

bublik don't be a dumb newbie. What you're proposing is just ignorant. There is no other way to say it. Put the OEM hardware in the car, or buy yourself HID approved projectors. Whatever, but it needs to be able to work with HID.

Ok, im far from noob when it comes to HID. One thing I was talking about which I have done before is in D2R apps is take the reflector from the HID Based housings (cutout) and basically apply/glue/attatch to the non-HID housing.

To be particular, we have taken the IS300 reflectors out of the headlight, on a crashed model, and retrofitted them into a camry. Its also a retrofit.
