Anyone using a Dongar to power their Dash Cam? Dongar finally stocked them and have one on the way.

 

I was thinking of using a Donger, but I decided to hard wire a power plug.

There isn't much room under the cover to accommodate the Donger and it is very easy to just remove the mirror and wire it on a bench.

 

I hard wired mine in with one of these:

 

The BlackVue dash cam I use requires 12 volts.

The Dongar has a circuit to step down the 12 volts to 5 volts via a USB port.

 

Here are the instructions for hardwiring:

1. Remove the cable cover from the lamp base to the console by carefully prying it off.

2. Remove the mirror by loosening (not removing!) the TORX screw at the base.

3. Disconnect the connectors by pushing down on the locking release.

4. Strip back the insulation on the two wires from the connector (black and white) and just solder and tape the wires to the dash cam power cable.

I stripped off about 1/4" from the wires (staggered!) and soldered the wires from the power cable, White + Black -.

FYI there isn't much room under the cable cover for the USB jack on the adapter solution.

 

This is why you need a dash cam, this just happened to me.
