I just installed a new Alpine in my gs300. they installed it by by-passing the factory amp. Now when I turn it up, lights dim. took the radio back to have the ground and power looked at. Brandsmart here in Kansas City says I need a external amp cause the radio is working to hard to push the speakers. Has anyone heard of this? I don't even have the sub hooked up, or any aftermarket subs for that matter.

If you are using the stock speakers they are right because they are 2ohm and it is straining the internal amp, if this is so change the speakers first and later add an amp............Don't run it like this it will damage the radio.
I don't think that running the speakers @ 2 ohms have anything to do with the display of the HU. It sounds like they tried to interface the "dimmer" lead to something that they were not supposed to.

That was my first thought until I realized he said it's only when he turns the volume up.
