Default AUDIO: Panel Removal.

CL, I need your help again ;

I can not figure out for the life of me how to remove the back panel to replace the subwoofer. I just bought a 12" Free Air Kicker only to find out that its a 10" hole. Has anyone fit a 12" sub in that hole?

Also, I removed all of the screws in the drivers side door to replace the MIDRANGE & TWEETER but I can not slide the panel off. I used BananaGS's site as a reference (http://lexusmodz.netfirms.com/GS_DIY...ers/index.html) but can not get that panel off.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanx.

Is this for the 2nd gen GS?

Rear seat has to come out. Seatbacks also. Then trim areas near the leg/foot position as well as on either side of the deck. Hidden bolts under the headrests covered up by a leather cover...lift up on the headrests and you'll find two more bolts. Can't remember all of the bolts but be careful when taking it all apart. After everything is out, THEN you can access the rear deck. 4 10mm bolts hold the stock speaker in place.

For the 12, BOTTOM MOUNT the speaker and use a small spacer ring. Otherwise the cone will hit the metal lip of the 10 inch opening.

1998 GS300. Ouch - So removing the seats is the only ways to get to that speaker? Do you know if I will need a hot glue gun to replace the fabric then?

Default One More Tidbit...

Kicker 12" Free Air Sub:

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...nfo&i=2063C124

"Free-air Mounting: In addition to being compatible with sealed and vented enclosures, the woofer can be used in free-air applications. A free-air subwoofer is designed to be mounted on a baffle board, which separates two areas of the vehicle. For instance, you could mount this woofer to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer."

Darius2004,

Do you have a fabric interior? Never saw a GS with one...

You shouldn't need a glue gun.

No, I have Tan LEather interior, the fabric is the cloth that covers the Subwoofer, behind the seat, in the rear window. I will need to pull that up the get to the sub.

Here are a couple phots detailing exactly how to do so...

Use a flat bladed screwdriver and make sure to tape the end of the screwdriver with some heavy tape. This will prevent any scratching or further damage. The side panels are held in place by the round plastic clips - sometimes they break off, other times they stay on. Just work off the panel very carefully and take your time.

Hey Percy, so, is there going to be a Volume II of THE BOOK? Seems like there is still a need.

Ron,

Wouldn't know what to squeeze in BOOK II (the sequel). Well, there's always audio/video installs, DynM330D speakers, DTS and other multimedia but then it kinda gets away from the SQ realm. Any ideas from you or the other members? Hard to believe I wrote THE BOOK back during New Years '01. Had a revision back in '02 but it was mostly dealing with the high end ESOTAR2 tweets and the effects of ringing as well as a frequency response chart of the stock system w/dyn speakers.

THE BOOK (as Ron calls it) is still available and has gotten some really good reviews. No need to toot my own horn, but I'd recommend it if you're even slightly interested in what's going on in the GS 2nd gen systems.

For those of you who don't know what we are talking about here, THE BOOK covers the 2nd Gen GS audio system with step by step instructions, with pictures for us with limited perception, for most anything you want to do with your system. Most of these questions about how I remove the sub or where do I route a power wire are covered in excellent detail and quite a bit more info on sound system components in general and, as always, the GS in particular. Wouldn't have touched my car without THE BOOK. Haven't looked at it for a while but maybe it is time. Oh, and I got two, one to spill Pepsi on in the garage and one for reference to stay inside - worked out well.

While I am getting closer to trying out the new Soundstream sub install, an outboard amp still has me a little dazed with running that power wire (actually, I think I can handle this) and getting the remote turn on wire from the HU. Vol. II - just more of what was in the first one and more contributions on every kind of install from simple amp mounting to speaker housing fabrication. Seems like a concise treatise on free air vs enclosed sub would be worthwhile. And of course, sound deadening issues which I think the GS really benefits from, including where that pesky sunroof drain hose is. Compiled pics of how the replacement face plate for the GS looks and the tradeoffs with the HU replacement (particularly CD player issues) would be nice. And it is probably time to update component selection tips with the current crop of equipment. And quit mentioned Velodyne. All you do is frustrate us who have tried to find them.

Ron : I'm with you - there is no way I am going to risk tearing up my beaitufl leather interior without detailed instructions!

Percy: "The Book" sounds good, where can I find it? Is it available online as a PDF?
