are you sure its not a replacement key? i believe the 98+ years had the remote built into the key. when i had a sc400 (97) it wasnt the key and remote as one. it was separated pieces a key and a remote.

 

Solved the problem ( it was me)
Hi again - sorry to be a bother - I finally found the problem and solved it - there is a switch on the dash (left side) by the hood latch release - IT MUST BE TURNED ON - it was off - everything is now working fine. I'm a dummy - but, figured it out - by looking and playing around.
