I took out two amps pushing 520 WRMS with 700 watt RMS peaks and shoved in a 50 x 4 amp without loosing too much punch.
I needed to recoupe the space I lost when I removed my Mcintosh 4 channel, so I shoved my trusty and rusty PPI Art AX400 4 channel in there @ 50 WRMS x 4 and managed to keep within 3 DB of where I was.
It's running the front at 4 ohms to my Focal components and the rear @ 2 ohms to my MB Quart ten's.

The 1000 watt amp will only show a real difference during the attack of a waveform/note, when the most energy is needed. If you are measuring dBSPL, your meter's averaging time will be longer than the duration of the music's attack, and you will not be able to measure this appropriately. The 2 amps will otherwise be close in output power for pure sinewave inputs, or continuous test music/tones.
The less efficient your woofer is, say, if you have a JL 13W7 monster, the more the need for current will show up. To generate solid bass hits with the W7, you need the 500 or 1000 watts of continuous power. If you have a more efficient woofer, like Alpine or Boston or MBQuart etc., you're less likely to notice a difference between the 50W and the 500W amp.
