I am considering adding Nav to my 99 GS400. It has the factory Pioneer system now with the 6 disk cd changer in the glovebox. I have heard that putting in the factory Nav after the fact can cost HUGE dollars.
My problem is this .... I don't want to mess up the factory look of the dashboard. I love the "large" buttons on my Pioneer factory stereo and I'm afraid that if I go with aftermarket Nav, I'm gonna CHEESE up the dashboard and lose my factory look altogether.
Many aftermarket navigation systems have displays that aren't integrated into the radio. A popular brand of aftermarket Navigation system is Alpine's DVD unit, but Pioneer's new AVIC-9DVD looks great too. They both offer displays that can be dash or center console mounted. The Pioneer monitor AVD-W6010 is a 6.5" widescreen with a removable mounting system.
P.S. for Screen shots of Pioneer's new AVIC-9DVD look at the press releases on the www.pioneerelectronics.com web site.
The mount type monitors, like Pioneer AVD-W6010 are intended to be mounted 'to the dash'. This could be on top, but that could obstruct your view. Mounted too low and it could be difficult to view the screen and drive at the same time. I'd make a template approx. size of monitor and try different locations on your dash.
From looking at a GS400 dash picture, I'd think the opening above the gear shift and below the radio would be the natural location. Since the monitor is on a mount, it could be removed to still allow access to this area.
