Hi: I have a 1992 SC400. I've had it for 8 years and I love it. But the radio/CD system has just failed. None of the AM, FM, or CD work, although I can very faintly hear each of them when I crank the volume up to full. What is the most likely suspect? How do I test? If it is the amp, where is the best place to get a replacement?
Most likely your amp. Your best bet is to check the classifieds here for a used amp as getting a replacement from the dealer is just not cost effective! You could out an entire new system in your car for what the dealer will charge for just the amp!
Do you have the Nakamichi system or the Pioneer system? Pioneer uses 2 amps. One for the sub and one for the remaining speakers. The Nak uses 1 amp to power everything.
I did see some Nak amps for sale on fleabay yesterday. Try there as well.
It is the Nakamichi tuner and I have the 12 disc changer, so I expect the whole system is Nakamichi. Thanks for the reply and tips. Is there any easy, definitive test on the amp?
Short of hooking up a known to be working unit, none I can think of. If you have a stereo installation place nearby, they may be able to bench test it for you. Simply take the unit out of the car and bring to the shop. Bench test is pretty quick.
