Default another stereo question

Hey all, I have a few questions. I've got some round about answers from other posts, but I'll let it all on the table. I've got a 98 ES300 with an in dash cd + a 6disk changer in the glove box. It has a factory amp (i believe) with a sub in the rear dash. I don't think its a nagahoochie (whatever that name is). Problem one...the stereo has all power, lights come on, change the radio, tape (has a tape player too) and you can see the display, but the sound comes in and out. A friend said it sounds like a bad wire at the amp, any idea? He thinks the amp is behind the glove box, how do I get it off? I'm assuming there's no dash kit for a new stereo, is there a good shop is western wisconsin, eastern minnesota that can do a custom? Also, what size is the sub in back, I thought an 8" but sounds like it could be a 10". Any help would be great. P.S. I'm driving to Cali in a month, long drive with no radio...... Thanx.
