I am considering replacing my factory Nakamichi system with an AVN (Audio, Video, Navigation-GPS) unit. Is it possible to do this in a phased appproach? Phase 1 would be the head unit, and bypass of Nakamichi 5 channel amp and CD player. Phase 2 additoon of amp for subwoofer and if needed other amps for speakers.. Phase 3 would upgrade of speakers.
Any suggestions on other approaches and considerations are greatly appreciated. The car is a 1998 SC400.
BTW, I am happy with the volume of the factory system. My primary objective is to get Nav and cleaner sound.
Not sure about what exactly you are asking but yes, it is possible; however I'd do it HU/Amps all at the same time. Once you install an amp, you might reconsider changing speakers at all. Stock ones will get alive with more power.
if by phase you mean do each part one at a time, sure you could do it.. but i would think that to do everything at once would probably end up costing you less.

Thanks for the idea! I am thinking about waiting for the new AVIC-2 HU. In the meantime I might get some amps. Any suggestions, or brands and models given the factory speakers? Also, one 4 channel amp + subwoofer amp, or Two 2 channel amps + subwoofer?
AVIC N2 will cost you a lot. I suggest N1 with upgrade. You need a 2ch amp for a 2/way component set up front (as long as it is a speaker set with crossover so they only need 2 channels) or 4 ch for 2 component sets for front and the back. A or 2 ch amp will do for subs.

I am pretty sure that the cross over is in the front speakers., but I will check.
The AVIC-N2 will cost more but seems to deliver more. I might wait a few weeks and see what the prices of the Avic-N1 do. They seem to be dropping pretty quick.
Looking at the space available, I think I will probably have to go with a 4 channel amp.
A new questions. Does anyone know ithe AVIC-1 or 2 will fir in the space of the stock radio? The space is pretty large.
