Nak Speakers
Re installing replacement speakers in LS400 doors it isn't difficult as you said, just plug and play. Only catch is when you purchase used speakers from a salvage yard they are used and might of been abused by a prior owner. My four speakers from Tap were duds/dead and I'm returning them for another set of four that work. Long term I will be looking for reasonably priced aftermarket 4" midrange speakers that will come close to matching the original Nakamichi speakers, 4 ohm/20-40 watt.
Out2005 I recently returned the four Lexus/Nak LS400 door speakers to Tap Recycling and I'm waiting for four more speakers to return that work. I have looked into a couple of options, one is to have the speakers rebuilt and received an estimate of $30-$60 each. Second option is to contact "Pioneersuby" who is working on modifying new Nak "aftermarket" speakers that would be the same power rating as the originals (20/40 watt, 4 ohm) and would be an easy DIY install with no modification to your LS400, just plug and play. He may also have some original Nak/Pioneer/Lexus speakers. Looking to the future I think it's going to get real tough to find working/used OEM Lexus speakers and plan on having a set of the modified Nak aftermarket speakers standing by ready to be installed when my factory speakers die from old age.
Gentlemen- Do as you wish but there is just no reason to stick with those Nak speakers when it is time to replace them. They are OK speakers, but there are dozens of 4", 5.25" and 6.5" speakers that you can buy for the same price or even less from www.Crutchfield.com, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. that sound just as good or better.
If you want to keep it as simple as possible, buy the same size 4" drivers - take the old ones to the store and let the salesman find one with the same diameter and hole pattern. If you go with a larger size, you may have to drill a bit more or fabricate a wood baffle board, but it is not a big deal if you are reasonably handy and there are plenty of threads on CL that show the process.
Plenty of us are driving around with a mix of stock and aftermarket speakers to no ill effect. The Nak electronics are top-notch, but you won't miss those speakers once you replace them.
