Sounds like the flange is closer to center to allow a smaller pinion gear to work. I wish they had a part number on the case, but they don't so we can't tell which units use the same case. A whole TON of them use the same giant snap rings to hold the spool bearings in position, so it seems they just have a couple of spool configurations based on the gearing range the spool will support.
