Default Leaking Tires

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. A few months ago I developed a slow leak in my drivers front tire. I took it to a local tire shop and they told me small sections of paint on the inner part of the rim that sits on the bead of the tire was corroding and flaking off causing a small air leak. They sanded it down and resealed the paint and it stopped the leak. I asked them if it happened to this rim, could it happen to all of my rims? They couldn't answer that, but now I think I know the answer. 2 of my other wheels now are losing air and I bet it's the same problem. Has anyone else come across anything like this...Is there a recall of some kind? Dealer says since my car is out of warranty, they can't do anything. Thanks!

Not to say the paint isn't your problem, but have you checked to see if the tiny hairs from the tires are the cause? I've had tire hairs on the sidewall that get caught between the rim and that would create a really slow leak. Might be worth a look.

I would also check the valve stems. My cousin brought home a brand new Camaro ss and his were bad on 2 only after a month of owning it.

I had this problem on an old SC300 with SC400 chromed wheels. I lived in Southern California when I bought the car, and everything was fine there. I later moved to Virginia, and during the first winter, I developed slow leaks in three wheels, all caused by the chrome paint flaking around the inside of the bead area. I assumed the road salt caused the condition. I replaced all the wheels with after market (don't remember the brand) and vowed never to own chrome wheels again. And now my taste has changed, and I don't even like chrome wheels

Thanks everybody. Yeah, it isn't the valve stems, it's the corrosion under the paint that's doing it...gonna cost about $300 to do the two wheels and who's to say if more "spots" pop up later...Maybe this is a good excuse to get some aftermarket wheels on the ole F huh? Lol

the problem you listed does happen, but its usually on aftermarket wheels from what ive worked with.

best think to do to locate an air leak is to drop the entire wheel with air inside of a water tank at places like discount tires. you will find where its coming from. its not rocket science.

This why I had the wheels powdercoated with a clear finish over the black paint when I had my wheels done. It is a lot harder to have flaking issue with powdercoating.
