Default Downforce vs. drag reduction

Hey guys-

In my search for a front lip spoiler, it occurred to me- is the point of it to create downforce or reduce drag?

My GUESS is that the lip spoiler such as the Toms is for downforce- and if that's the case, I would think that sturdy construction is important, as is the lip extending a decent way under the car with bolt points, so that it has the rigidity and leverage to put some compression on the front suspension.

THe "wind dam" type, maybe more like the Wald (maybe? or am i thinking of the wrong one), seems to be more about passing airflow around the car and reducing drag.

I'm not sure where dual front splitters fit into this...maybe under both categories.

Am I correct about any of this?

The Wald isn't really designed with aerodynamics in mind. It's more for looks than anything else

Most front end aero is designed to produce downforce
