HyperMKIV 05-08-10 02:24 PM

I will post pics later...still at toyotafest

HyperMKIV 05-09-10 09:33 PM

i was testing out how these splitters worked at high speed...

they apparently can't handle over 150+mph

here's what was left of it after:

naw... it's still intact...no matter cause it's going to be my spare bumper soon
already got a brand new one which will be painted soon. along with the AC front lip and another grill surround... :D

Robs IS250 05-10-10 04:54 AM

Is that what i found at Miami Beach yesterday floating around?!?! :D

Juanca 05-10-10 09:21 AM

What material was it? By the picture it doesn't look like carbon fiber, maybe it was cracked already from the drilling/installation.

HyperMKIV 05-10-10 10:02 AM

it's ABS plastic...pretty cheap stuff...
and it wasn't cracked. it's just the way it mounts...at higher speeds, the front of it will start flexing and sooner or later it'll start flapping...depends on how you mount it i guess...

n0th1ng 05-10-10 10:10 AM

CF versions seems to be more thicker than what your picture shows..
but it shouldnt snap like that... :(
:thumbdn:

primecut 05-10-10 10:20 AM

I feel sorry for the car behind you! I have the CF one and not the eBay one, so hopefully that one is stronger.. I haven't heard any flapping or sounds coming from the front.

there were no cars anywhere close to me, so that's why i decided to try it...
also, do this...go to your splitter and press down the very front and see if it flexes at all...

i'm sure the carbon ones will not flex as much
the ABS ones flap a lot...maybe i should make a vid of me moving it up and down...at high speeds i can imagine it flaps and then on a down-ward movement, the wind can catch it and that's when it'll just snap...

whoa!! u even managed to get a shot at that speed that's what surprised me!

i haven't gone that fast yet, and i don't think i need to duplicate the experience... i would say though the inexpensive splitters are good for taking a beating as long as there weren't any damage on the bumper. hope the bolts didn't tore the bumper.

HyperMKIV 05-10-10 06:28 PM

i still have yet to look under the car...kind of scared...haha
i have another bumper already (and front lip) plus the splitter was screwed into in only a few spot, the rest was into the undercarriage...

iSuxeL 05-10-10 06:33 PM

That's why you buy good stuff and not eGay stuff.

jaslapp1 05-11-10 08:08 AM

A buddy of mine got the same one I think. I'll have to let him know what happens when you get going a little too fast. Sucks it happened but atleast everyone is safe especially the F.

JDKane527 05-11-10 09:12 AM

Too much downforce!! haha Damn that would be embarassing if someone was in the car.
"What was that??" "Oh...nothing..."
Are you changing it to the CF version?

HyperMKIV 05-11-10 10:17 AM

if he just cruises around, i'm sure it'll be fine...but for some of us, we just gotta open er up once in a while...and if you have these, i'm just saying to watch out...haha

if you look at a lot of those other splitters or lips that protrude out, they use braces...that's what these need...maybe i'll take pics of how much these bend...maybe it'll help other understand what actually happens at speeds...

my buddy was in the car and he didn't really say anything...i think he was just watching the road...

HyperMKIV 05-11-10 10:40 AM

Interesting this post came up today...
I was sitting around the other day trying to think of a more rigid DIY solution for splitters rather than CF or ABS. I thought I'd template out the shape and have my buddy cut it out of 6061 aluminum plate on his CNC machine, then wrap it in 3M CF vinyl (or whatever, powder-coat, bang can, etc). Pre-drill the holes for the nuts/bolts, and also use turnbuckle style mounts.

Open for discussion, feedback welcome!

HyperMKIV, where did you get the silver braces that connected to the front splitter? Looks great.

I have also been thinking about a splitter like this for a while as well. I was on the fence about how the car would look with the rods, but after seeing the pics posted, it dosen't look bad at all....and i think the IS-F front bumper will have better places to mount the rods. For those with Splitter expirience...Does the splitter have to be flush with the leading edge of the chin, or can there be a slight gap from the bottom of the chin to the top of the splitter? inpute would be great.

Was it full CF or just CF wrapped?

flush wold be best but it's hard to get them flush due to the underside of the bumper... you'll have to just try it to understand i guess...

Yeah I Figueroa flush would be best but the way the chin is designed to mount it flush the splutter would be angled up. If I mount it the way I want there would be a gap and I'm afraid that rather than the wind being directed into the air inlet, it would gather in the gap and cause either excessive resistance and put way too much stress on the splitter and be counterproductive. Any experts have input or know the most proper way to utilize this type splutter? Thanks.

just to let you know, these eBay splitters are pretty much for looks. the underside are hollow...not smooth. i highly doubt they're much good for what you're intending on doing. you're much better off with something custom made for that... just my 2 cent...

i can take pics of the underside of my other one if you want to see what i mean...

GarrettISF 05-12-10 05:18 PM

I just picked up these splitter rods:

http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/a...s-p-45474.html

I have the same splitters as you HyperMKIV. Hopefully these will help with the breakage...although the rods arn't the most pretty of additions.

^ i actually like them..
i might do this again on the bottom of my lexon lip hahah but i havent decided just yet.. :p
