Default Rear shocks need replacement

When getting an oil change, shop noticed that my rear shocks are leaking. (I'm around 96,000 miles now.) Got quoted $1,500 to replace them.

On my BMW, when replacing shocks, I would replace all the mounts as well because they had rubber in them. I'm assuming the Lexus mounts do as well. Anyone know what all should be replaced when replacing the rear shocks on an IS?

That’s not warranty? Why are shocks failing?

I've only had a shock replace once on my ES and that's all they did, just the shock. But I didn't have 96,00 miles.

$1500 seems like a lot of money... the shocks on the ES were only a couple hundred bucks each. If it isn't warranty work I would at least look into supplying the parts after buying online.

Also - the warranty is 4 years or 50k miles. Powertrain is 6 years or 70k miles. His car is completely out of warranty coverage (unless he bought a high mileage extended warranty).

Your ES probably doesn't have adjustable suspension? Just saying. Regular shocks are a lot less expensive.

@OP. You can probably find coilovers at $2k (all corners) if you want to go that route.

It had AVS, same as our IS

It looks like the IS 500 rear shocks are around $230-240 each online. Bell Lexus is $242.05 each.

For reference, rear shocks cost my carmax warranty $2300. These are the variable ones.

Talked with Toyota service dept that does oil changes for me (I get a service plan where I get three oil changes for $250). They will let me buy the shocks online and install them for labor charge of about $250.

Much more reasonable! In it for maybe $850, nearly half price!

Why are we killing rear shocks? This a typical Lexus issue?

you're definitely better off buying the rear shocks on your own and then having a reputable mechanic swap them out for you.
