I did not get PPF. I’ll just repaint the whole nose after 10 years if the chips get really bad.

the only way the PPF works is to wrap the whole car so you don’t end up with mismatch color after the paint gets old, that’s a lot of money and troubles. Car paints are designed to protect the car for reasonable amount of time, spending so much money to get another layer that also needs to be taken care of just doesn’t make sense to me. I also consider myself frugal so you may not want to follow me.

 

Same here. PPF just isn’t for me besides the protection of coarse.

 

PPF doesn’t cause mismatching in the paint. I had PPF for 5 years on the hood and front bumper on my last car. I had it removed because it got damaged in a storm. The paint on both parts looked the same as the rest of the car. It’s clear film that lets in the full spectrum of light so the paint gets exposed to the same ‘bleaching’ effects as the rest of the car.

 

YES it does. PPF blocks UV over time this means paint fade will be different vs. panels that are not protected. It takes many years but it happens. Go to 5:00 in this video, proves that PPF blocks UV. Misinformation on this forum is frustrating, if you don't know then don't make something up based on a single observation.

 

PPF causes mismatching which is why they say to never do a half hood.

 

There should be a disclaimer on all of this stuff, stating results may vary.

E.g. If you work from home, the car is garage kept, and it’s washed and detailed regularly, then you’ll be fine. No fading, trapped dirt, blah blah blah…

If the above does not apply, create a PPF fund, and keep it moving.

Cars is museums generally don't need PPF.

 

I don’t know…I got full front PPF and full ceramic on mine. I don’t daily it as I have a work truck. It is parked in the garage with a car cover. I don’t know, but I sleep better…every time I take it out, I fall in love again as if it was the first time I drove it home. I think PPF is worth it every time I detail my LE. I don’t plan on replacing/selling this car so I protect it for me and not the next person.

 

I agree with most comments , at the end of the day it’s based on personal preference. I daily my IS500 and don’t plan to sell it. Love the car and keeping it long term.

I’m getting full PPF + Ceramic coating on the entire car with windows and wheels. It is expensive , ran me about $7k CDN. I don’t have a place to wash my car, the detailer applying the protection said to take it in to him every month for a deep clean and I’ll just tip the person washing my car. IMO I weighed the pros/ cons and I felt like it was worth it for me.

I like the idea of PPF, but it's definitely not worth more than a set of Michelin PS4s to me.

That whole industry causes me to raise my eyebrows. Too much fear factor. Is the film expensive or are labor costs the driver?

I'm 90% garage kept with white glove TLC when I return from any outing.

 

The same could be said about tires, man. How many people buy top of the line tires to daily drive?

 

In the end you get what you pay for. Spending more money will always get you better stuff and better results, whether it's better tires, PPF, or a Porsche. The question is how close can you straddle the line to being satisfied, without spending more than you need to. The IS500 has always been an ideal car for this way of thinking: You're getting a top engine and a beautiful car at a mid-tier, if not base, luxury price. But when you start to pour thousands of more dollars into it IMO you've gone past that line. That's why I'm against PPF.

 

Curious, those that don't want ppf on thier car, do you get a case/screen protector on your phone?

 

Partial PPF is really a mid way down but paint mismatch down the line is a question that arises. And removal of PPF after 5-6 years is yet to be discovered, will the detailers take the same level of enthusiasm and care when you ask them to remove a PPF and the labor charge will also not be cheap if we get a full car PPF because you need a ton of patience and time for that task and it's not the fancy stuff with nice clean and foam wash but rather extreme care and steamer, hair dryer and skill.

 

No phone cases for me. But I do get the best $249 Android phone I can find every 16-18 months.
