So, why is the new IS not considered 4th gen?
I am a new owner of a 21' 350. Is the 3.5IS interior when it comes to the center console layout (shifter, mode know, etc.) exactly the same as pre-21' models? Looking at some interior accessories but not sure if I need to look for 21' specific or if the 3IS stuff will work. thanks.

1. Basically the entire door. Color options changed but as far as parts dimensions I believe they are the same
2. The knee bolsters on the side of the center console
3. The shift ****
4. The glovebox
5. The actual radio itself (not the display)
6. The instrument cluster
7. The steering wheel (not that if you are looking for a steering wheel find one that has the Lane Keeping Assist button mentioned)
8. The seat dimensions.
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
This is the easiest way to check what generation your IS is to find the vin tag located on the inner B-pillar on the driver's side jamb. The row below the bar code designates Color/Trim (CT/R), the next set of numbers is the chassis code, steering position and the vehicle identifier. Toyota chassis codes used to be easy to decode, but become more complex with the new platforms and engine choices.
Example: GSE31L a.k.a. IS 350 RWD
G = Series Engine (First letter of engine code) = 2GR-FSE/FKS 3.5L V6
S = Computed letter of model code
E = 2nd letter of chassis identifier (XE30)
3 = Generation of chassis
1 = Drivetrain configuration for chassis = RWD
L = Drive position = LHD
LEXUS BASIC MODEL CODE – 3rd Generation IS (2014 – Current)
Toyota New “N” Platform – XE30
ASE30 Engine: 8AR-FTS/2WD
GSE30 Engine: 4GR-FSE/2WD
GSE31 Engine: 2GR-FSE/2GR-FKS/2WD
GSE35 Engine: 4GR-FSE/AWD
GSE36 Engine: 2GR-FKS/2GR-FSE /AWD
GSE37 Engine: 2GR-FKS/AWD
USE30 Engine: 2UR-GSE/2WD

Just for reference, this vin plate is from a prototype 2008 IS F. 2008-2014 IS F is based on the 2nd Gen IS (XE20) chassis.

these actually changed in shape slightly. I thought they were the same until I put spare ones from a 2017 onto my '22 to test fit it to use it as spare for a project I have in mind. Snapped into place no problem but gaps all around and not sitting flush with the rest of the center console
