0 to 60 times for 2021 Models
Hello All - new to this forum.
Just an observation on 0 to 60 times reported in various articles (motor trend, car& driver, etc..etc). Don't quote me on any of these numbers, and correct them if they seem wrong.
2021 IS 300 RWD 6.1 seconds
2021 IS 300 AWD 5.7 seconds
2021 IS 350 RWD 5.7 seconds
2021 IS 350 AWD ?? (can't find any reference for this)
What gives with the two 5.7 sec entries? Does the 300 AWD really have only 260 hp? If yes, then what would you expect from the 350 AWD in that case, which is allegedly making 51 more hp ?
I know there are different transmissions (6 vs. 8 speed), taller/shorter gearing, different weights, etc. but don't these figures seem a bit weird?
Thanks

Unless they had all cars on hand for a particular test, it's tough to compare car A to car B unless the testing conditions are exact.

fastest 0-60 I’ve seen stock by a publication was a 2014 350 AWD by motor trend they got 5.3 seconds. Probably brake launched the heck out of it.
The 6 speed only has to shift 1 time to hit 60mph but my understanding is the 8 speed pulls better after.
Either way it’s quick for a bulletproof Japanese sedan. At the end of the day a ~3700 pound sedan with only 277-280 lb of torque depending on year and no DCT or launch control you can only expect so much.
I love my 350 AWD FS but I’m not winning many races in it, the performance car segment last 10 years is just straight up insane and Lexus chooses reliability and refinement or performance. I knew that buying it. Still more than enough power to get in trouble and have some fun tho!

If you use roll-out with the AWD IS 300 it will make a big difference due to its AWD setup. It has no traction issues off the line, whereas RWD might struggle in the first few feet.
Personally, I always thought my 2016 IS 300 AWD "felt quick" compared to the claimed 0-60 time. My new 2021 IS 350 doesn't really feel any quicker till after 60 MPH, where it does keep pulling just a little better thanks to the gearing.
A few years back, I tried testing my 2016 IS 300 AWD and simply using video time stamps to estimate the 0-60, and I'd say it would be somewhere between 6.2 and 6.4 seconds (true 0-60, not the magazine version ).

Just for reference in case anyone hasn't seen it, this is the article where Motor Trend recorded an identical 0-60 time between the IS350 RWD and the IS300 AWD:
https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2...wd-first-test/
If we're to take them at their word it would be interesting to get both 2021's on a dyno to see what's what. If the only difference between the two engine configurations is a tune, I guess it is possible that the IS300 is a little more potent than claimed.

The IS300 AWD buzzed from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds on its way to a quarter-mile finish in 14.3 seconds, matching the rear-wheel-drive 2021 IS350 F Sport to 60 mph and losing the dragstrip sprint by 0.1 second. Wait, what?
A Tale Of Two Transmissions
A close study of the acceleration charts calls into question the degree of "detuning" that really happened on our test car's engine. The all-wheel-drive traction off the line gives the IS300 a clear advantage below 20 mph, but the fact that the IS 350 isn't able to clearly pull ahead until about 70 mph despite gearing that's about 9 to 11 percent shorter in the first three gears, and a weight-to-power advantage of 2.8 pounds per horsepower (12.2 versus 15.0) suggests those engine output figures are seriously "conservative." If they all run as strong as this one, there's no significant penalty to pay if you pick the lower-spec AWD IS ...
