Default Noob question, why does my AWD have a tow hook slot?

Hi,

Noob question sorry.

I see that my AWD has a tow hook compartment. However, I thought that you can damage your car by towing it. Is there a reason it's there? Or can this car actually be towed with no issues?

I would imagine this has been added aftermarket. I assume you're not the first owner. Lexus recommends avoiding towing with any IS.

Mine has a factory tow hook in the front. I used it for the license plate as many others do.

Don’t think it’s for long distance towing, but more for like pulling you out of a ditch. Or as a tie down when transported on another vehicle, like a flatbed truck.

Ouch. I don't know how I misread this.

Yeah that's there from the factory.

As mentioned above, the tow hook would be used to remove the vehicle from a stuck situation, like a ditch.
It should then be flat bed or dolly towed (both axles off the ground) for any significant distance.
