I let the engine sit for about 2 hours and when I turned the car on, the sound was gone for about 10 seconds and then it came back. Has anyone experienced this or has any idea what could cause this?
to be fair, that sounds like tapping or knocking, but def not “ticking”. What is the oil level ?
just an update: it was a rod knock and the crankshaft was gone, so we got a new engine and the car runs like a dream. it's quiet unfortunate as the car only had about 40k miles but it is what is it.

Was there any particular reason found as to why this happened? Oil starvation perhaps? That's very unusual for these engines as they have proven themselves for the last ~16 years...But of course nothing is perfect and they had to have made at least one bad one at some point...

Was that engine ever supercharged/turbocharged at some point in its life? These are bullet proof engines if oil is at the correct level..
Either it was starved of oil or alternatively it was made to produce power that it was not designed to handle.
if you don't have any maintenance records on carfax Lexus will deny you. It happened to me. ****ers.!
lexus does not use carfax to do that. They have their own internal system to keep track of vehicle history / state. I DIY my is350 and I make sure I add my DIY records to that database as well.

you can register on lexus.com website. https://drivers.lexus.com/lexusdrivers, then provide VIN and get access to the car’s history. Keep in mind you can add your own entries there, but obviously lexus can tell which ones come from a certified service place, and which ones are your own entries. Obviously can’t remove other entries too.
