Default Extended Warranty

Hello

I would like to get some opinions from fellow Lexus owners.

My lease is ending this month and I have decided to purchase my 2016 IS 350 RWD non-Fsport. I am thinking of keeping the car for another five or six years.

I understand that these cars are reliable however nothing lasts forever. My car currently has 47,000 miles and basic bumper to bumper warranty will expire before the end of this month given the fact that it will be 48 months (I extended my lease twice at 6 months intervals). Powertrain warranty will still be in effect until 70,000 miles/6 years.

Thinking of purchasing an extended warranty (Platinum Care) I believe it’s called. After shopping around at five different dealers, the lowest quote I got is $3,300 for 8 years/100,000 miles. It’s a bit more than I’d like to pay but I understand that it will pay for itself when one or two major things go wrong. Shall I or shall I not get it?

IMO you won't need it, or certainly not need to get anything major repaired. It's a Lexus. We got our daughter a 2020 Honda Civic EX recently and when he
asked if I wanted to buy the extended warranty, I said the word Honda on the back is the warranty. Lexus/Toyota is the same. My two cents.

Just the radio is $2000+ to repair.

It's not hard to take out the radio to replace it unless some strange programing to the ECU is required, just get it used.

With that said it's rare for an IS to have major issues.

If you can afford it, go for it. I personally don't have one. I think the most expensive issue i have seen around is the radio and mostly affected some 2014 owners.

when I used to buy cars in the past I always got an extended warranty. And they actually paid off. Transmission replaced on a 1995 Honda Prelude at 50,000 miles. Transmission replaced on a 1999 Honda Prelude at 55,000 miles and 90,000 miles. Transmission replaced on a 2006 Acura TSX at 80,000 miles. (Notice that these are all Honda products). The 2010 Lexus IS 250 was problem free. Never used warranty that cost $2,000 (platinum 7 year/125,000 mile.) Now days I just lease and turn back in every 2 and a half years or so...

I had a 2010 Lexus Rx350 that 8 months out of warranty had the head gasket and water pump go...both covered and paid for my extended warranty.

my 2015 350 so far has had about $800 in extended warranty work covered...hvac system and an exhaust leak. I also have 2 leaking struts they are going to replace.
