The skeptic in me believes that Lexus got caught flat footed with the debut of the new Acura tlx that this "new" refresh could barely compete with it and is using the protests/blm as cover to buy time to figure out what to do with it.

I would think it is far too late to be making changes to a 2021 release. But I don't know how these things work exactly.
You are correct, it is far too late to make changes now.
They could skip the refresh and move up to a major minor scheduled change point, basically jumping it up to the changes planned for two years later to now. That is very easily possible at this point, basically because production hasn’t started on the model yet. Interested to see what exactly they have done to it or lack thereof. I just hope it’s worth it, with improvements in styling inside and out. Unfortunately I don’t think the power train is going to be any different this time around. It is to late in the game to change that if they hadn’t already.

my guess and ihope I'm wrong. New front and rear, revised suspension, much nicer interior, updated entertainment from 20 rx. Same. Power. Trains. Then they will axe it 2 years from now due to low sales, and make the ES the Acura/ Lincoln fighter. Ugh
looks like a major refresh after dissecting the video by capturing screenshots to study it
Quarter panel more rounded instead of sharp, gas door changed along with it.
Rear door also changed in shape due to change in the quarter panel, Taillight mounted to quarter panel changed shape as well
obviously the taillight mounted to trunk + trunk
Those are the same door handles, same badges, and same overall shape. However, the fixed rear window has been changed, and it looks like the sheetmetal itself on the rear fenders has been smoothed-out. Pretty significant changes! This reminds me of what Toyota did with the 2015 Camry - same platform, but nearly every body panel and interior piece were swapped out for new ones.

Production should have already started for a Fall release.
I was looking at the description that Lexus put on that teaser video and they said "The thrill of driving is back". For the most part the IS 350 doesn't have much of a thrill and the fact that they said "is back" could mean that they are bringing something from the past back, maybe a V8... or at least a TT V6 since that will have a thrill of driving. I don't know much about the way Lexus markets things but those choice of words makes me believe there will be a higher power trim than the IS350.
"The thrill of driving is back"... on the awful Turanza standard touring tire. I can't believe they would stick to this tire after all the negative feedback it got on the 3is.
