Default Tires

I just brought my 2017 IS300 AWD FSport into the dealer for the software recall and state inspection.
I have had it for 2 years w/10K miles on it. Left the dealer with no issues reported to me.
I thought I must be lucky regarding the front tire wear.
Well, a week later I get an email from the dealer stating that I will be needing 2 tires.
I now see that they are at 4/32 and 5/32 according to the state inspection. Rears are at 8/32.
I had already planned on getting my tires through the dealer as needed.
I have never replaced just two tires on a vehicle in my life. Strange, but expected from the many posts here.
With winter driving coming up, I think I want to get them replaced ASAP.
The OEM tires are the Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02.
Should I investigate getting a full set of better tires through the dealer?
Any idea what they might offer? Best to get new tires before the snow, right?

  1. Should I investigate getting a full set of better tires through the dealer? Given the amount of tread still left on the rear, I would only replace the front. The dealer is always an option, but if you have a local tire shop, they may be able to provide better options and recommendations for you vehicle. I wouldn't bother with the Bridgestones, there are definitely better tires out there for less, or the same, money.
  2. Any idea what they might offer? Best to get new tires before the snow, right? You definitely want to have better tires for the snow...a tire at 5/32 has 50% traction in the rain...so imagine that in snow now. If you are going to be driving in the snow, like real snow, then I would strongly suggest a set of dedicated winter wheels. Many will downside to 17 inch rims with snow tires. In that respect you can get the winter package now, and hold off on getting the two front tires until Spring 2020.

The rears are basically still new, with 8/32". +1 for just replacing fronts if you want to use the same tires again.

FWIW, I had a similar situation - albeit with 21k miles - and preferred to just replace all four. The OE Bridgestones are not great in snow. My new tires are better, if not amazing, but anyway - this could be an opportunity to upgrade.

don't change your rear tires and don't get the OEM ones.. i do want to warn you though, i replaced my front tires (i had bridgestone turanza oem), with michelin as3+ (really sticky, nice all season tire).. when i took sharp curves, my rear end swung out because the bridgestone turanza tires are garbage.. ******** tread life and ******** performance.. and don't get it done at the stealership.. get it done at sams club or costco or another tire place with cheap prices.. be wary of tire shops trying to over charge you because you have a "lexus"
