If so, that's a good indication that the tank is not venting properly.
I would add this one caveat, if you have a vehicle without any issues and drive it "aggressively" and then remove the gas cap, you'll also get that "whoosh" sound...so the whoosh test isn't 100% conclusive, just simply one indicator.
You have to imagine that is you drive "aggressively" the fuel in the tank gets sloshed around pretty good, which in itself churns it up with the air in the tank, thus increasing the pressure in the tank...so if you remove the cap right away, "whoosh".
I have never overfilled the tank past when the pump clicks but I’ve started having this issue too at around the 2.5-3 year mark of ownership. I don’t get the whoosh sound when opening the gas cap either. Its weird because the pump also clicks now if im manually holding the lever down if I hold it down all the way so I have to press it down slightly to fill up and it takes foreverOriginally Posted by Sasnuke
Here's a question to everyone who is having the issue, when you remove the gas cap before fueling, do you hear the big "whoosh" sound? Like you're opening 6 beer bottles at once.If so, that's a good indication that the tank is not venting properly.

I'm whoosh-free myself but still have the issue occasionally.
In this scenario I would be considering the fuel station as the issue more than the IS.Originally Posted by HOMER350

Ironically, despite what I said earlier, I always fill the tank after the pump clicks off, when the tank is full.Originally Posted by Miintt

One time I filled it to the hole in the neck where you put the nozzle in, cause I was going on a trip to the US and didn't want to buy American gas (no offense guys), and I managed to make it back on my side of the border on the same tank...barely.
Usually when I start fueling I pull the nozzle lever about half way and then ease it to almost full shortly after. I never use autofill, so I don't know if that makes a difference in the long term.
6 years plus of overfilling the tank and I don't have a fueling issue...also I don't hold the pump nozzle hard against the filler neck..I usually leave a small gap so it can vent better.

Good to know you feel the same. Thats pretty much what I've concluded. Maybe they don't service the pumps as frequently as my car would like. Idk. Originally Posted by Sasnuke

So this problem started with me at about 10,000 miles with my 2017 IS300 FSport.
It may by be happening only at one station, but at different pumps.
I always lock the handle and use the pump auto-shut off.
Today I was trying to top off my 2/3 full tank, but the auto-shut off fired after
just a dribble of gas went in. I went manual, but it kept shutting off.
I did about 10 squeezes to get about $15 worth of gas.
My question for those of you going through this, how do you know when
it is shutting off for real.....that is, you are at max fill?

For my other car, which has this problem, I do a rough calculation in my head (check the gauge in the car before shutting it off, multiply by the tank capacity, e.g. 1/2 empty x 18 gallons = ~9 gallons to fill)Originally Posted by RKSTRAT

Thanks kj07-
I hope this is not permanent......I will try another gas station also.
Who ever thought I would be having to go through this with a Lexus.
The funny thing was today, all my cabin rattles were gone. Perfectly quiet.
Then I went to get gas and had this fuel problem.

Either your car has a split personality, or someone is playing with your mind and swapping cars on you. Originally Posted by RKSTRAT

Have the same problem with my 2015 350...literally all I have to do is pull the nozzle back out about 1 inch and it pumps fine. That’s it. Obviously don’t pull it out a lot, but next time try polluting the nozzle out just 1 inch and see if it works, does for me.
