I'm assuming you didn't have any issue with warranty claim and everything went smooth?
They fixed it, no hassel, I'm still covered by warranty until late 2020, since I wont hit the mileage limit before then. I'll keep an eye on it though. I had the vacuum regulator issue already I wonder what's next, ha.
Got mine fixed this weekend.
They did confirmed it was a torn gasket and replaced the entire assembly. They also flushed and replaced the coolant.
It is a bit concerning to buy a car asserted for its reliability and encounter a potentially expensive repair at 30k miles.
Folks who drive less than 6,000 miles a year should check on this issue before their 5-year warranty expires.
I wonder how long this particular water pump design has been in service. Or if its particular to the 8ARFTS. Cause I know the engine is largely a redesign based on an older Toyota 4 banger where they added strengthening ribs to make it more rigid for turbo duty... so it's not a design from the ground up to deal w/ stresses from turbo.. i wonder if the torque from the turbo is just cranking on the block twisting it causing the gaskets to get scraped/deformed. just a theory of mine that last part..
Either way I think (i hope) an upgraded gasket gets spec'd by toyota.
In reality when the waterpump leaks the coolant comes out through the breather hole.
There's an internal seal that's the root cause of the leak in that case...but there's no way to see the seal, even if you remove the pump from the vehicle.
There's a shaft that runs through the seal...on the outside is the pulley that the belt turns, and on the inside is the impeller that moves the coolant...so realistically you can't see the seal unless you completely disassemble the waterpump...which no one is going to do.
The reality is they put down that wording on the work order for warranty purposes...that's all.
And yes, it is possible to have one that leaks from the waterpump body seal onto the block, but honestly those are pretty rare.
Toyota has had waterpump leaks for decades on all their vehicles...and the reality is that Aisin is the supplier of those waterpumps.
So I guess the question is, do all the manufacturers that use Aisin pumps have the same history of leaks as well.
I think I'm having the same issue. Right now I'm at around 84k miles. The car temp start running hot. Of course It happen on my way to my travel assignment. I checked my coolant level, and it's s little bit under the low mark while the engine is cold.
I did not see any leaks around the coolant or under the car. I haven't had the chance to pressure test the radiator. Of course it's over the warranty period. Does anyone other brand besides AiSIn (toyota OEM)brand that has a better seals that I don't have to replace every 60 k miles?
