Question Wrong trunk space number on Lexus's site

This is kinda weird, but I've noticed over the past couple of years Lexus has changed the IS's trunk space twice now. I remember seeing 13.8 cu. ft. originally, then 11.8 recently, and now, 10.8.

The 2017 IS 200t F Sport reviewed by Car And Driver seems to be similar at 11 cu. ft.

However, go to the full specs, and guess what it is?

I know 13.8 is the correct number. I had a Camry with 15.0 cu. ft. of space before this, and the IS's trunk is almost negligibly smaller. I was honestly quite impressed when I first saw the trunk in person. Wonder why Lexus is shooting themselves in the foot with this? I've literally seen reviews where they say, "It barely has more space than the RC", such as this one.

Anyway I emailed customer support about this to see if they can get it fixed. Just thought you all might find this interesting.

Interestingly enough, when the 3IS first came out, there were several reports of a 10.8 cu ft trunk. I was relieved to see it was later changed to 13+.

For whatever reason, they've increased the volume on the GS, though it hasn't physically changed. In 13-15, they said it was 14.1 cu ft. From 16 on, they state it's 16.2 cu ft.

I know some of the SAE ratings change from time to time on how to measure the volume, so that could play a part, but who knows? It seems inconsistent.

My last car was actually a camry as well (2004 LE v6!). Hahaha, let me just say, I was able to fit 3 full-size luggages in the 3is trunk, with decent room to spare for like backpacks and other odd shaped items. But yeah, I was confused by the trunk space for the longest time. Im glad Im not the only one who actually criticized the dimensions that were posted on various sites!

Here's the reply I got from Lexus:

Thank you for contacting Lexus.

The difference between the cargo space measurements is a matter of difference in the standard of measurement.

In the 2016 IS 300 the cargo space was measured using a German based system, VDA (Verband der Autombilindustrie). The 2018 IS cargo space was measured using a US based system, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

For your reference we have attached the vehicle specs for both the 2016 and 2018 IS. The cargo volume dimensions are outlined on page one of each document.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

So JDR76 is exactly right - the 10.8 measurement was an early SAE measurement.
