Default 2017 IS LED Bulb

Was just viewing the IIHS safety ratings for the car and the headlights seem like they could use an improvement.

Anyone tried upgrading the stock LED bulbs?

And the godawful turning light as well while we're here.

I think the 2017 uses a different system so it may not be fair to compare it. And no you can't change the bulb because it's not really a bulb. It's a diode directly mounted to an IC board. It's highly integrated into the projection unit -- it's soldered on. And it would have nothing to do with the actual LED anyway. It's also the driver, the lens, and the projector. Also heat management. In otherwords, it's complicated and there's no easy alternative.

Just enjoy it.

The best light on the market right now belongs to the Prius V which is a Koito BI-LED projection unit. That unit runs plenty of power because it's large and can have a huge heat sink and has an integrated internal fan. Our tiny fancy headlights can't allow that type of cooling, nor can it allow a fan. Only passive cooling. Not only do your lights have to work, but they have to work for a long time. You can bump up the power but without the proper cooling, they would die fast.

You can aim them slightly higher to extend the range a little. Lexus seems to aim them conservatively.

How hard is it to actually do that? Are there any tutorials around?

Very easy. Here's a vid someone made that basically shows you what to do:

Try to remember how many turns you make so that you do the same number of turns on the other side.

Err... is it the same process for the IS?

I only see one of those crank-looking adjusters by the headlight, and it looks like the one for L/R and not U/D.

Drive up to a wall at night--about 20 ft away. And start cranking. It took me a while to find them but i eventually did... i think they're the ones at the corners... and I do recall it saying "L/R" and discovering it was meaningless. IIRC I turned them and it did the trick. it was a while ago.
