Default Supercharger: is it worth it to you?

Hello fellow 3IS owners...

I've been doing some research on forced induction for our vehicles, the 2GR-FSE in specific, but this is not a question about output or who's cracked the ECU or blah blah blah...this is a question of priority.

There are some kits out there...3 or 4 that took some digging to uncover but not many have purchased these kits. so let's talk abstract...

What would it take as far as specs go to make this purchase on top of your priority mod list? Price? Specs? Reliability?

I'm not necessarily looking for "what you all know" type of response. I want to know what you want from a forced induction(supercharger or turbo setup) to make it into your top five mod to do list.

GO!!

Supercharger would be the easiest. Streetable reliability is key. no one wants to be nervous driving around their forced induction car and wonder if it will leave them stranded somewhere. Price? 7k-8k installed would be the sweet spot.

Now, would I put a supercharger on my IS? probably not. Not a priority for me. There is a dealership selling 2016 Mustang GT's for just over 40k with a dealer warrantied supercharger installed putting out 700 hp. I would buy that.

I think the only way I'd do it is how they did the TRD Superchargers on the Scion tCs. I had one installed on my '06 tC. The supercharger was warrantied for the duration of the powertrain warranty when installed by a Toyota dealer. Which ended up being a good thing as the bearings went out and the whole thing had to be replaced.

Your question is a bit odd since I cant see anything that would make one kit or another suddenly put forced induction on my wish list.

For me, if I needed forced induction to get the power I suddenly needed, I could easily take the money to buy a kit, trade in my car, and buy a faster model and have peace of mind and reliability to go with it.

Man I wish the difference between used RCF and IS350 was that small here. In Toronto, a new IS350 can be had for a little over ~$50k. The cheapest used RCF I can find is $70k here.

$7-8k seems like too much, unless the power gains were pretty substantial (i.e. 425hp+), and it came with some type of engine management system for tuning, etc.

For me, $3-5k for a turbo kit would be far more compelling - maybe something with twin scroll setup to minimize lag. At that price, even 375hp would be good.

I agree with kyoungjook. I'd pay around $3-5k for a 50-75 HP boost.

I am on board with the guys that would prefer to simply purchase a vehicle that is manufactured in the power range you desire, rather than going with aftermarket modifications. Having modified various cars over the years with only hit and miss satisfaction, I no longer pursue anything aftermarket beyond cosmetic and/or minor plug and play components.
