Options for replacing "headunit" software
Was just curious, but before integrated navigation and such we used to replace stereo headunit all the time.
In modern cars, where the headunit is repsonsible for a lot more than just music, that's no longer easy/possible to do.
I was just wondering if there was a solution available that replaces the software of the 3IS with minimal hardware changes. Basically replace the crappy enform software.
I still can't believe Lexus hasn't embraced Android auto.

The interesting thing is that the enform toyota/lexus units are made by Pioneer... and pioneer pushes their AppRadio platform and already support Android Auto and other qnx apps like CarPlay that are actually only apps within AppRadio. I'm almost certain Enform is just a skin of this technology, because, why reinvent the wheel?
The Lexus app engineers probably use the same SDK from pioneer.... Unfortunately to get the SDK from Pioneer, you have to already have Apps on the google or apple store, and submit a request to port your software... but I think only the most credible software devs would ever be approved by Pioneer. Once you have this, and if Android Auto is open source, it could probably be an app within the Enform App Suite. We need the person who made the Yelp / Pandora app to chime in...

Everything is closed source so good luck to anybody that wants to addon to the GUI software onf the ENform system.
Hardware addon will be probably required and best way of doing it.
Hardware module will take over control of the screen and controls to operation external software
Problem with Android Auto is that its not open source.
Any mention of trying to request for API for client development, things get hush hush at Google.
Carplay on other hand is definitely possible for our stereo but just have to wait for companies to develop the addon hardware etc to play good with our stereos setups joystick controller.
Apple provides all the tools to get a working client on hardware side.
Lets just say I work for a company that does interface modules and have seen very early developmental of Carplay running on older navigation GEN5 Lexus touchscreen so it will be happening, just have to wait.

What does the nature of the source code licensing have to do with the ability for manufacturers to request membership into the Open Automotive Alliance?
Notice the list of partners on their website is all big major companies only.
