Default Residual value vs. trade-in.

Hi folks,

My new IS 350 F sport is my first lease. I have always financed or bought outright.

December 2014 Motor Trend's 36 month residual value on above car is $24,678.00.

My 36 Month LEASE in March 2015 shows a residual value of $31,140.20.

This is a difference of $6462.20. More than 20%.

What's with this difference?

Thanks.

Manufacturers inflate residual values to move more vehicles. Our 2009 2IS had a realistic residual on it and it had about $3-4k equity 2 years into the lease. With today's 70% + residuals on a 24 month lease, there's not much chance the trade in value will exceed the residual. The good thing is you can lease a $50k vehicle for around $$10-11k with very little or nothing up front for 24 months - sweet!

I would be far happier if I could buy the car at the $24,678 and trade it in at the $31,120. price.

Great deal for the DEALER!
