I cannot unscrew the **** without having the whole shifter rotating. It's just screwed on according to picture but the whole thing rotates including the base pole. Am I supposed to rotate it when it's in D position only? On the 2IS I can unscrew the **** in Park position.

 

As you can see from the pic, the boot and shift **** are two pieces. You have to gently grab a hold of the ring at the top of the boot and pull down. It should snap out.

Park it in the sun for a couple hours, heated plastic is easier to work it in my opinion. Just grab the base of the boot and pull it down.

 

Once you pop that boot down, you'll notice that the boot has a clip that won't work with most/ if any aftermarket shifters
To compensate for this, you can remove the clip entirely, which would involve you removing that part of the armrest.

If you flip the shifter boot inside out, you'll see the plastic clip is just kinda tied down with a ziptie.
You can just cut the ziptie, and save the clip for when you decide to go back to stock.

My threaded shifter had an adapter and on the bottom of it had exposed threads.
I had boot back on the threaded "rod", threaded my shifter one, and fed it through the boot.
Once I had it where I wanted, I put a small ziptie on there to keep the boot on the new shifter, and put everything back together
