Default TPMS on new wheels

when buying aftermarket wheels, can our oem TPMS be transferred to any wherl or is there some sort of requirement to use jt? Also does the TPMS ONLY measure tire pressure to tell you when one is low? Does it do anything else? If not I wouldn't mind just reading my tire pressures every time I stop home to save a couple hundred bucks or however much it costs
