The emissions station I've always used does a visual check and requires there to be a CARB sticker with a number on it. They have to look it up on a DMV system to see that is it approved for use on that model car (It may fit/be identical to a 2007, but if it's on a 2006 and 2006 isn't on the list you're not passing). There's no gray area from what he told me. If it's on the CARB list it's ok.
I have the F Sport intake on mine, and he needed to see the sticker stating it was CARB approved. Luckily I did put the sticker on it. He did charge extra to smog it because it was a modified vehicle and the extra time required to search the database to make sure it was legal in CA on my vehicle.
I'd recommend to swap it with a factory box for your inspection. IT takes like 15 minutes to do the swap and will save you time and stress hoping they will pass it.

most CA 2is owners have more than just the Joe Z intake, and all they did was drive to their nearest smog testing facility and pass. YMMV, but the inspector would have to be a hardliner to fail you for *just* a Joe Z intake.

Completely slipped my mind until Someone mentioned carb stickers.
Granted when I got a smog check I dont think he even looked for the carb sticker. I have a Joez but the 1st gen so its a dark grey matte color. Looks completely stock.
I went and got a carb sticker from dealership just in case though. Got it for free. Chick behind the counter just handed me one like a piece of candy.
