Wonder if the quality goes south with the newer vehicle, my 97 LX450 just started doing this 6 months ago but my 08 is250 start having the same problem too now!!

I am blind so forgive me. Did you remove the black trim from the chrome then plastidip? Or did you just dip over the entire thing?

 

How do you just slide it off? Did you have to take off the door panel?

 

I took a razor blade and cut off the problem areas then I just dipped over everything.

 

Will removing the lifted black plastic trim off the chrome trim off affect the door with water leaking or such? I just want to leave the trim all chrome and avoid the hassle of replacing or plastidipping.

 

 

I have been reading through in the posts related to this issue but did not get a conclusive answer, cracking/peeling of this black plastic started several years ago and now reached a very bad level, i.e. became very obvious, see attached picture. My questions are:
(1) Is there replacement part and what's the part number?
(2) Is it possible to remove this plastic cover entirely without leaving any scar on the chrome trim?
(3) If I remove it, would that cause water leakage into the door?
(4) What is the purpose of this cheap plastic thing?

Mine did the same…. I just cut it off carefully with a razor. No issues. You will just see the silver so I tried a diy plastidip spray. I’ll show some pics from when I did it. It cost about 20 bucks. 2 years later it’s peeling a little so I will attempt it again.

The trim sprayed with Plastidip cans. Not much prep work just clean and spray. I learned to not do it in the sun or hot weather. Then you just peel off the excess and it peels perfectly. It does not stick to the car paint.

Final look .. not bad. It is like a rubber feel, matte black look. It held up through washes etc. but if u poke it with anything sharp or scrape it with your nail it will come off. The whole thing peels off easily if you don’t like it.

 

Thank you DraiZe66 for sharing how you solved this peeling issue. May you tell me why did you have to spray plastidip on it?
I want to cut out the plastic part at the line shown in the picture below without spraying it with anything; however, I am afraid of two things;
1- The cutting line is not perfect/not even.
2- The chrome part would be scarred/scratched.
What do you think?

 

With and without the plasti dip

I used the plasti dip spray to make the chrome look black again like it originally did. You do not have to do this. I cut mine with a sharp razor right at the edge where the peeling material starts. I marked in red below where I cut it. There is like a small gap area there and you will not scratch the chrome trim. Just do it slowly.

Just saw the red line you made on your picture. That’s the spot. Angle the razor into that gap….it’s pretty straight and cut away from the trim. You do not need to push to hard. Don’t cut the window rubber thing that touches the window. Go slow and pull the peeling the stuff away as you cut.

FWIW my 2013 is peeling. I bought some vinyl from amazoo but it turned out to fake garbage, not 3M and not friendly.

I'll peel the old off and cover all the chrome with vinyl as I just don't find the combo of black and chrome appealing.

Thanks for the website. I just ordered a roll of matte black. Going to give the vinyl a try this time instead of the plastidip. It’s been a few years and I have to redo it. Seems like it’s much easier. Amazon always has fake garbage. That’s probably why it was hard to work with.
