Unhappy paint chipped on freeway - what to do :(

hi everyone,

so i was driving on the freeway and something hit my car!

obviously the entire paint was chipped on my fender, as well as the bottom of the side mirror.

i have 0 deductible for comprehensive, so i believe i can make a claim for it, but should i take my car to the dealer or a shop of my choice to get an estimate? how do you think it's going to get repaired (or even replaced..?) ?

i don't want to just use touch up paint .. it'll look really off..

thanks everyone any insight will be greatly appreciated on how to handle this

Call your insurance first. Then they'll suggest shops they use or you can go to whomever you want to go to. They will NOT replace that. It's just a scratch. Insurance may go up when uou have to renew the policy though. Good luck.

I would contact my dealership and find out who does their touch ups on their used vehicles. I had a guy and his franchise was called Colors on Parade. He did an awesome job. There are people that specialize in touching up scratches. I would NOT get my insurance company involved. A claim is a claim and they count against you.

^This! I would not get insurance involved, even if you have $0 deductibles. It is likely the $100-$200 repair will end up costing you more if your insurance goes up due to you making a claim. Talk to your service rep at the dealer and they'll be able to recommend someone to you.

You really don't ever want to involve them for something as minor as this, its still up to you, but this won't cost much to fix.

I agree, I wouldnt get the insurance involved for something minor. See your dealer and a few body shops to get a some estimates.

Good luck!

Default Don't go to your insurance

I work in insurance and take everyones advice... Don't involve insurance on such a small claim, it will bone you in the long run... Hope this helps

One no....2, 3 YES!

My daughter had so many insurance claims with State Farm that my husband and I had to sign waivers on each of our vehicles that they would not be responsible if she is driving any of our vehicles.

Insurance companies can play real dirty. I had a car stolen once. I had Liberty Mutual. Once the car was repaired, I noticed that the floor mats and antenna were missing. They considered that another claim and canceled me for filing 2 claims in one year.

They have a license to steal.

if you are skilled and have patience ,, all you need to really do is get the paint from the dealer, and get a filler clay and a super fine tip paint brush and a wet sponge

I wouldn't. I have $500 deductable. I wouldn't dare file a claim for anything less than $1000. Call your agent and see how much you could save if you raised it. You will be surprised.

I normally just touch it up myself. It is simple. The idea is to protect the bare metal from getting rusted. Once touched-up, most people cant see it from far away. You will know it's there because you knew. Just get over it as rock chip is bound to happen.
