I live in a Canadian city that experiences winters that are either very mild or very, very unforgiving. I'm talking -10 deg C to -45 deg C. How are our cars for starting up in that kind of cold? Will I need a block heater? Or a battery with more cold cranking amps just for the winter?
From my experience, no you do not NEED either, it will start just fine. That being said, it is much easier on the engine if you do have the block heater, especially if you are trying to start it in -40°C weather.
