That's what she said.

That's the main difference between the two - synthetic oil you can go twice as long as dyno oil between changes. I recently sent my Mobile1 synthetic to Blackstone for testing after 8,000 miles while I was changing out the oil filter only, no oil change. Report came back that I could easily go another 2,000 miles before my next oil change. I believe the iron levels were higher because I took the oil from the oil filter location. When I change my oil at 15k miles, I'll send it in for further testing.

Many people use syn oil because it last longer than conventional. You are right however, conventional oil is just fine.

In my experience the Lexus dealership typically uses the Toyota OEM 5w-30 for our cars. However, the dealership I go to also offer Mobil 1 synthetic for an additional charge.

Starting with the 2011 IS, Lexus uses Synthetic and the Oil Change interval is now every 10K.

I haven't heard of such a thing. OEM oil filters should be fine as long as you change the oil filter every 7000km or so

No sir, the OEM Filter is all you need! But if you plan on going past 7500 miles with synthetic oil, be sure to change the filter at 7500.

+1 for bobistheoilguy
or if you guys want more proof, do a simple google search.
both are fiiiiine. but non synthetics can break down sooner than synthetic, which means less oil life and less lubrication.

I had always used conventional oil, prior to buying the Lexus. I use Castrol conventional in my Honda, and Mobil 1 synthetic in the IS350. In my opinion, the difference is in how you drive the car. The Lexus is driven hard and I feel that warrants synthetic oil. It does have better lubricating properties. Many people think that "synthetic" means that it is man made, but this is not true. Crude oil is refined to the point of being conventional motor oil. Synthetic oil is simply refined more than conventional oil. With that said, I never go more than 3k miles between oil changes, regardless of whether I'm running conventional or synthetic. I don't care that Mobil claims that their oil is good for 5k or 7,500. They claim that the extended performance oil is good for around 10k, but good for them.... As for the "synthetic" filter, Purolator now markets these, but I don't buy that either. I either use Toyota filters or Purolator's regular filter. They are more than efficient enough, especially considering I don't go over 3k anyway.
