yea its a bit small, but definitely manageable. I drive my friends at college all the time. I get the occasional complaint here or there, but thats usually when i have 3 medium/tall guys in the back. Most averaged sized people will fit just fine. I've fit 2 guys 3 girls in the back one time (people sitting on laps.) i would definitely not say its useless.

Sadly, they're small enough that you will find yourself apologizing to your passengers. Not the greatest feeling among older adults if your otherwise proud of your car.
Of a greater and more recurring issue to me has been the lack of a folding rear seat.
It always amazes me how little I can actually carry without them. This Lex has taught me the lesson.... never again will I go without folding seats.

My previous A4 was smaller than the IS. So I wouldn't complain. And the 3 series BMW aren't huge either.
I think these compareable sedans focus mostly for the driver and co-pilot's enjoyment. LOL

I use my back seat every day. Both my kids sit back there. One with a forward facing car seat and one with a rear facing car seat. They fit fine. If you want to haul around your 6' tall friends on a daily basis then don't get an IS. If you want them to come with you sometimes then tell them that they can drive or deal with it! haha

I have fit people back there fine for around the city, I live in Houston (20 mile radius) and I'm about 5"10. Long trips probably not good.
If you are that concerned with cabin space, not sure why you are considering these vehicles. You should be looking at full size sedans, not smaller "sport" sedans. Good luck on your search though.

I agree with everyone that the backseat in our car is small but def not useless. A useless backseat is the one on the sc430. The 3 series is the same size as the IS so if that's your solution to having a more useful backseat I'd recommend you take a second look at both cars to make sure you're shopping in the right class.
