No, I don't touch the paddles.

The car is in fully automatic mode while in "S" mode. The only difference is, you have the option to permanently limit gears for the duration of that trip. I choose to permanently limit the car to 6th gear.

If I am in S mode "6" at a stop and I go WOT without touching any of the paddles or the shifting ****, the car will automatically shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and so on as it normally does in D mode.

The benefit of S mode is that I am allowed to choose the limiting gear. If I choose "6", then S mode becomes no different than D mode in term of actual driving.

Of course, while in S mode I always have the option to limit the car to 5th, or 4th, or 3rd, etc. if I want to, but I never choose to exercise that option.

Or to explain why he is doing that... go back and read my post from page 2-

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/5807368-post24.html

see all the stuff it does in an attempt to anticipate your intent?

Put it in S instead of D and it does not do any of that stuff. Even says so right in the info I posted "AI-SHIFT control will be cancelled when the driver selects the S mode"

(which actually kills most of the benefits you'd get from putting it in ECT-PWR by the way)

I never found the ECT power mode that useful. When I have it on for a long time my foot and brain get use to it and adjust to the sensitivity. I will soon then continue to drive how I normally do without ECT power on.

But I do notice that the gearing is way more aggressive. When I am coming to a stop the transmission downshift more aggressively.

first post ever, (hi btw) and i must say this is a very great thread! only thing is that i've been testing the ect pwr but i don't notice my 250 downshifting when i let go, she just coasts like usual.... but then again after reading syzygy and kurtz's posts about the AI learning from our usual driving..... i think its cuz i frequently let go of the pedal to decelerate rather than quickly shifting to brakes.

off topic, but since i drive an automatic, does it mess up the transmission for me to go from say... D in 6th, to N at a stoplight, only for it to go green and i switch back to D, and it switches over to 4th gear when i start accelerating? hard to explain but lots of switching between D and N!

ECT on kills my gas haha, without even trying. I already have a heavy foot as is so NORMAL mod is good for me. Hardly Use sport unless im weavin in and out of truck when im in a rush or something. Whenever someone wants to play i leave it in D.

Why do you do this? Just curious. I can't imagine it's neccesarly a good thing sounds like extra work you are making the transmission go through

Doesn't really hurt, but it doesn't really help either

What about putting it to N while going downhill on the freeway? Does that hurt the transmission?

Putting it in N won't hurt the transmission, but be aware coasting in neutral is illegal in most states... (and dropping it from N back into D while moving may or may not be a great idea)

I did a quick google to check on your state and it appears illegal there as well-

California motor vehicle code, section 21710
“21710. The driver of a motor vehicle when traveling on down grade upon any highway shall not coast with the gears of such vehicle in neutral.”

It's something I started doing in hopes I would slow down without the car constantly shifting up and down between say 3rd and 4th gear cuz of me lightly tapping on the gas then braking then gassing again. So I figured I would just go N until I needed to accelerate, then switch to D at the last moment. But after staring at the gear position in the multi display long enough ive noticed that I think I'm putting it through more effort than before... Which is why I was asking :P.

How long would you say I should drive aggressively for the AI to relearn new shifting positions? I want it to spend a little more time in the 2nd n 3rd gears, especially during traffic instead of going 2 -> 4 then back to 2.

Yeah it's a habit I picked up from my friends. They claimed that I can save some gas that way but after much research, I think the gas saved is bare minimum?
I just moved to this country a year ago and I'm not sure of all the laws. Why is it illegal to coast in neutral? Is it because people might forget to put it back in gear?
Another thing I like to do is to put it in neutral(neutral+footbrake if my car starts to rollback) when I'm at a long red light.

It's probably a safety thing... if road/traffic conditions suddenly change such that you quickly need to manuver/accelerate you'd have to:

1) remember you're coasting in neutral
2) calmly put the car back in the appropriate gear (or D if auto)
3) THEN do whatever you need to to adjust to the changing conditions

Versus just being able to mash the gas and maneuver as needed.

given how folks who get their floormat stuck under the gas can't even remember they have a gear shifter it's probably a wise policy.

Abrupt downshifting with a manual transmission burns out clutches fast. I can't imagine that all that downshifting can be good in S mode.
