2004 m3 manual vs is350 ?
one of my friends bought an used 04 m3 manual...
and he wants to race me at the drag strip
we used race with his modded mazda3 vs my old chrysler 300m several years ago when we were at the college.
and now he kept saying that his m3 will pull ahead a lot on is350
i know m3 is a real nice and and its fast too but is350 isn't that slow....drag times are only 0.2sec different
Will I be able to win? he knows how to shift..he is good. never misses any gears between shifts.
I think if i get little bit wider/stickier tires on the rear to lunch it bit more hard, I might have a chance.

you really cant go by 'drag times'~ most ppl post up their times when under ideal conditions, not the middle of summer...
just goto your nearest track and race him
just goto your nearest track and race him

Clearly a driver's race.
Quickest stock e46 m3 dragtimes: 13.052, 13.210, 13.313, 13.340, 13.485
Quickest stock IS350 dragtimes: 13.228, 13.234, 13.345, 13.420, 13.459
Zeroto60times:
2004 BMW M3 Competition Package 0-60 mph 4.6 Quarter mile 13.0
2007 Lexus IS 350 ....................... 0-60 mph 4.8 Quarter mile 13.3
Let's look at one of the most biased, BMW-pandering "3rd party" out there - the infamous Edmunds -
E46 M3: "The M3 reached 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 102.1 mph. A stop from 60 mph required 111 feet. " - Edmunds Inside Line
IS350: "0-45 mph (sec.) 3.4
0-60 mph (sec.) 5.2
1/4-mile (sec. @ mph) 13.8 @ 101.2" - Edmunds Inside Line
Edmunds has the IS350 quicker to 60, but with a lower 1/4 mile trap speed. Traction is going to be a huge factor here.
If I had to bet money on the race - I..wouldn't. I would not bet money on this race because there's definitely no clear winner.
I mean, here's an example of an IS350 trouncing an E46 M3 at the drag:

I bet you could find videos of e46 m3s trouncing the IS350 at the drag as well. Really depends on who gets good traction (lower 60' times).

Getting stickier tires will definitely be a plus.
And please for the love of god do NOT touch the paddle gear limiters. Don't touch them at all, don't fiddle with them, leave them alone. If you touch them you will lose, don't touch them.
Take traction control off by holding the trac button for 3-5 seconds, get some nice sticky tires, and maybe brake torque to 1200-1400 RPM or so and hope for good grip.

Just the opposite in fact. Use Normal mode for a drag race.
Anyway, the biggest thing is that the M3 is a stick. He'll win if he gets a perfect launch and makes every shift perfectly. He still won't win by "a lot" like the M3 owner thinks, but he'll win. If he hits every shift perfectly.
Whereas the IS350 only has to launch perfectly and keep it floored to the end of the 1/4 mile. The computer'll shift for you, and way faster and more consistently than any human ever could.
To the original poster- you might wanna consider slightly different sized tires to give yourself a small gearing advantage...I wouldn't run em all the time, but if he's ok with you having for-the-track- tires and you don't mind the expense then a pair could do you some good. I believe Gernby and others used this trick to shave a couple 10ths off their 1/4 mile and that's really all you'd need.

Other than that, the name of the game is weight reduction. Be sure the spare tire is out, and run with 1/4 to 1/8 tank of gas if possible. Running on low gas alone results in a rather noticeable (albeit slight) improvement in performance.
I agree power mode is great for this purpose.

And dont "smoke" your street tires at the track. just get the little bit of grit with a quick spin and be done.
brake torque it to about 1700 and NAIL that light. start moving your left foot off of the brake when that third yellow light goes on, mash the gas, and you should be just starting to move as the green light hits.
I've got some of the most consistently lowest reaction times I've ever gotten in my IS.
This effer WILL move.
I love these convos.....yall are the folks I've been designing for the whole time.
