Default Dealer's urgency of replacing tires

Took my '08 IS350 in for an oil change and the gas pedal recall today. I have 25k miles on it with the stock tires. The service rep called me and said that my car is not safe to drive even 2 miles, and that the front two tires need to be replaced immediately b/c they will "blow out" at any time. He also said the rears need to be replaced, but not as urgently as the two front tires.

How much truth is there to what the dealer is saying? I'm don't wanna pay the dealership for tires b/c their prices are outrageous.

Any suggestions?

Go in and see it/measure it for yourself or tell them to give you the measurement.

I had a blowout at 15,000 miles. Are the tires the ones that came with the car?

Yes, same ones that came with the car.

What should the measurements be?

In CA the minimum is 1/32 of an inch in CA. Which tires did your car come with? Mine came with the ER33 Turanzas and I replaced them at 30k. Could've gone more but I got a nail in the sidewall

I believe he said it had to do with the inner part of the tire. I'm about to head to the dealership now and will take a look at what he's saying.

My car came with the Bridgestone Turnanza's (sp?).

The tires should have wear bars...if the tire tread is the same as the wear bars, then its time to replace (tires have lost the ability to move water)...if you are brave, you could go a bit longer, just be careful in the rain...

Lol they said the same thing when I took mine in... 2 months later my tires are fine. and still have a decent amount of tread. They're just trying to make some money off ya.

the stealership just wants to make money off of you. of course it's safe, each of those tires is top of the line 3 bills each, you think they're just gonna blow out once you leave the dealership? i drove on the stock fronts until i saw the metal underneath the rubber, i don't recommend doing that, but i'm just saying you'll be fine until you're next service so no worries.

Go up there and check it out. Not like they won't let you see your own car. The chords are probably showing on the inside of the tires.

ever heard of the wear bar??? google it if you don't know, and look at the tire yourself.

Exactly what it was. Front tire had little holes in a few places on the very inside of the tire and you could faintly see the chords.

I ended up driving it home and plan on ordering tires today. I don't want to spend a lot, and prefer all season's. Any recommendations, or just pick one of tirerack?

BTW, thanks everyone for the input.

I went 50k on my stock rears. By this point a couple of small holes were starting to show. Great excuse to buy wheels and tires.

I replaced the fronts at about 25k, and i still have the original rears. I'm almost at 39k and I need to replace the rears soon.
