i always say that whenever you can get the boards that nigel sells. they are universal fit, so that way if you ever want to change colors or put them in another car they will be easy to move. then i say use vleds for locations where boards will not fit. there are a lot of places where you can change the bulbs to LEDS. i agree with iSuexL the boards nigel sells are sweet, i have a blue board in the trunk.

Does one need to manually turn it on and off, or does it turn off when you close the trunk? I am afraid to leave it on.

mine was off when i first got the car
i turned it on and its been working fine
goes off when the trunk is closed

It goes off when the trunk closes. How do I know? I had a friend of mine jump in the trunk and then closed it. lol.
