Default transmission

what is the thought process behind the transmission downshifting when the car senses decelration? ive gotten used to it and barely notice it anymore, but i cant imagine why toyota would want to help slow the car down with the tranny instead of the brakes.

All automatic transmissions downshift under negative acceleration.
