Cool Z2 Installation

PICTURES POSTED: LINK

My installation is simple and doesn't require but 2 wire taps! (to get the HU working). I had to tap a couple more wires to get backup camera and ipod working.

To open up the dash, follow the instructions from this PDF file: LINK

Carefully remove the wires from the back of the stock stereo. On the left hand side, one of the harnesses is clipped to a gray plastic place holder. Do not break the part wrapping around the harness; instead, you can insert a flat screw driver to the base of the gray plastic thing and pull it outward. The harness on the right hand side though, take a small scissors and remove the electrical tape from it. The whole console should come out easily now. (It helps if you have another person that can hold the stock HU while you are unplugging everything.)

The two wires that I tapped are the battery and the ignition. I screwed in the ground wire straight to the metal body of the car (there are two screws behind the stock HU).

For the ignition wire, I tapped it to the harness for the cigarette lighter (orange wire); my ignition wire was short and that was the closest reach.

For the battery wire, I tapped it to the biggest harness on the stock HU. It is a green wire ALL the way at one end (pin 1 in the attached picture of J66). There are a couple of green wires but this one is all the way at the end.

By now you are wondering how to get the sound through. Well, the way the stock HU works is that it sends only left and right channels to the stock amp. From the stock amp, it splits to front and rear. The way I did my install (the current install), I tapped into the speaker wires for left and right (using my aftermarket HU's front left and right). I have the wiring diagram in the attached picture.

Its not very pretty so I am planning on reinstalling it this weekend. Instead of tapping the speaker wires, I am going to get it into an LOC and then just plugging it straight into the auxiliary port (since only left and right works it will be fine).

With either installation, I will be using the stock HU and stock amp. I put the stock HU in the dash board (I did not take it apart just in case I need to swap it back in). From the aftermarket HU, I cannot control fade but I can control balance (since I plugged in only the FRONT left and right). But from the stock controls, I can do fade and balance. I retain the steering wheel control on the volume and 'mode'. I can even use the stock HU in the dash (but I am trying to eliminate sending two different signals through the speaker wires by using AUX input).

With the aftermarket unit, I can customize the EQ. Right now, I don't have all the settings tweaked out so it doesn't sound very good.. YET. I will post the pictures of my installation ASAP. I hope this guide helps you in the install. If any of this is confusing or I did something wrong, please let me know.

Oh and before the installation, take off the negative terminal of the battery and be sure that everything that needs to be grounded IS grounded before hooking the battery back in. The window controls from the drive side will not work so you will have to go to each window, hold the button down to put the window down, then hold on to the button to put the window up until you hear a click.

Default Audio Wiring Diagram

This is the full audio wiring diagram. I have an IS250 w/o Nav and I looked at the radio receiver assembly with the J66 harness.

Default Diy Aftermarket Hu

okay guys, I uploaded the pics; 3 versions - 56K, Large Size (Full screen on 1024) and Original Size. Because there were a lot of pictures, I posted them here. I apologize in advance for the ads but its just to offset the hosting. (They are not annoying popup ads)

Instructions are there as well and all the documents are also located there. Please PM me with any questions or anything I may have missed. I will try to get back to you asap.

It took me about an hour to take everything out and about an hour to wire everything. It took me several hours to put everything back together. My estimate is that it will take you a whole day.

I have not tapped the VSS wire yet. Will add more pictures for that later as well.

i wonder why no ones just completely transfers the ac controls onto the bottom of a fiberglass, then mounted the din above it. and just made it completely custom+in a nicer area. looks more factory.
