My lexus vs. Utah snow
If this is just a one-off trip, better rent an SUV with AWD and minimum all-season M+S tires (dunno if you can rent something with snow tires, esp in cali)
But if you do drive in snow more than once a year and you do it pretty routinely during winter, but don't want to have a second set of tires, get a set of Nokian WR or WR G2 all-weather tires. They're essentially snow tires but can be used year round in all dry/wet/hot/cold conditions with minimal compromise between dry/snow handling, ride, and noise.
Summer tires will not work in sub-zero temperatures even if there is no snow on the road. The harder compounds of the summers will harden in the cold and gives u no grip. Add snow to the equation and you're practically going to be skating in your IS.
