I believe the JDM Crown Athlete is based off the same platform. Have not seen one in the flesh to confirm this. . . (to be PC, it is the IS that's a shortened version of the GS platform, GS was launched first )

I’ve heard people on car enthusiast boards say the IS is based on the Camry, I of course remind them that they are on a car enthusiast board and should probably not be under the opinion that they are a car enthusiast. No self respecting car enthusiast would make any comment like that unless they are:

1) Fanboy
2) Hater

Goes to the old saying that if you don’t know jack about something, you shouldn’t stick your head up and try to make broad opinions about it. But then again, isn’t that and "my car is the best car" standard operating procedure for the internet tubes?

The 3rd generation GS was introduced as a 2006 model year vehicle, same as the 2nd generation IS. As far as the similarities with the new Toyota Crown Athlete goes, they do share the same engine, but are based off of different platforms:
