Default Grill Bezel, how to strip the chrome?

(1) Hey CL. I am planning on getting the chrome bezel on the grill of my 2IS to color-match. I just received an extra one and was curious on how I could strip the chrome on this thing? I did a search on "chrome stripping" but most result only talked about chrome stripping on plastic car models. They suggest soaking it in oven cleaner and it should come right off but I'm not 100% sure I should do the same to it. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Any help is appreciated.

Also, before someone suggests it, I know I'm going to get it professionally painted and that he should be able to take the chrome off without worries but my painter is on vacation for two weeks and I thought if I do the stripping myself, it would be a bit cheaper. However, I do I want to do it the safe and right way as well so i'm asking for any advice.

(2) If I get bored enough this week and can't wait, I might just paint this myself using spray paint. I have an Obsidian (black) 2IS, so a couple coats of primer, universal black, and clear coat should do it right? Or is it not going to match at all so I should just wait for my painter?

(3) I also read that dupli-color has a primer that could be used on plastic and chrome strips, plus I've seen people paint their chrome emblems without stripping. Is it to safe to paint over the chrome if I go the route of "DIY"? If I go this route, I'll try and take pics of the DIY too for those who wants to try as well.

Sorry for the long post and I also numbered each question so it's easy to answer in case you just want to put a yes or no. However, an explanation on why is highly appreciated. LOLZ. Thanks CL.

i would just sand it till its dull since you are priming it anyways and just paint over it. I used duplicolor from kragen for my bmw grill and it worked perfectly, and with black its pretty easy to match too.

No need to strip the chrome. Just lightly sand it to knock the gloss off, prime, and then paint.

Soak it in 409 (cleaning product) for several days. Should just float right off, at least it works that way on model car parts. - give it a try?!
