Garmin GPS systems are the best portable navi on the market right now.

I've had a Garmin street pilot GPS for almost 2 years now, it's the reason I didn't even consider paying like 3k to have nav in my IS (it cost massively massively less than 3k and doesn't cripple itself when I put the car in drive). You can get -good- standalone nav systems for 1/10th what lexus charges nowadays (and move it to another car is you want). You lose the backup camera, but it's not like the IS is a big enough car to really need one... and you lose BT, but a good BT headset is under 50 bucks.

The nice thing about the factory nav (which is more like $2500 than $3k) is that it's always available without being a target for thieves. I've been seeing lots of stories in the media recently (e.g. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/loc...,2494094.story) about thefts of portable car electronics.

There are a lot of sites that review gps', this is the one I check frequently for new models. Plus they have a lot of reviews and alerts on falling prices.http://www.gpslodge.com
I went el cheapo on my first one and now I shopping for a better model. Buy right the first time.

It's 3k if you're getting the ML system (which I am, just without the NAV)...with the normal stereo yeah it's 2500 extra, but you can still get pretty decent standalones for 1/10th the price if the camera and BT aren't issues for you. The other thing is it's -massively- cheaper for annual map updates from Garmin than from Lexus. (you save nearly the cost of the GPS each year that way)

The theft thing is a fair point if you live someplace with decent crime rates and aren't likely to remember to hide it in the console or someplace when you get out of the car..

I know if this car was for my wife we might've gone that way as she never remembers to put it in the console when she uses our Garmin in her car and I'm not riding with her...(thankfully crime rates here are nearly non-existant, but it would've long ago been stolen from her vehicle in most places)

You can find the Garmin I series (i2, i3, i5) for around or under $200. Amazing little gps. I take it on all my business trips and has never failed me in the ~2 years i've had it

meh, people just need to use common sense when leaving their car. Don't put these things in plain view! My gps unit is only int he car when I am. Otherwise, it's either on me or hidden in the trunk.

It's still $2500 if you order the ML system and navigation as separate options. It's $3000 if you order the ML/Nav bundle, but the extra $500 is to upgrade the six disc changer from CD to DVD.

No argument about the cheaper map updates with Garmin, a fact that is made even more painful because most people consider Garmin's map vendor, Navteq, to be superior to Fujitsu Denso's (Lexus) vendor, TeleAtlas.

Heh, that CD/DVD changer thing is a whole seperate argument I'll be having with Lexus in the near future- since they list the stand-alone ML option as playing DVDs in multiple places.

+1 on the Mag 2000. Love it! Never an issue with it - I take it with me when I fly out of town. Nice and thin too not a big fat one.

I've seen them as low as $179
