Engine start noise
Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum. I have a 07 IS250 AWD and lately it has been making some wierd noises when i start the car. The sound is more like a hard ticking, rattling and scratching noise. It has been doing this for awhile now and the dealer has not been able to find anything wrong and has not been able to reproduce it.
Do anyone of you have this problem or is it normal? I am thinking it may be the fuel rail recall that was replace or something close to it.
Any sugguestion would be helpful.
Thanks.

Welcome to the club, and welcome to the engine startup crank noise club too.
Check out this thread. This is a well documented case and if you are out of warranty it looks like it'll be about a $2000+ repair. Like me i am out of warranty so im not even going to try to talk to the dealership to have it fixed. Apparently it doesnt really harm your engine so i've read and there are ways to "mask" the problem by adding more oil or changing the oil weight you use. The problem i believe has something to do with the oil making it to the top of the crankshaft. dont quote me on that. Someone can correct me if im wrong. But yeah, heres the thread they talk about it.

Do you VIN# have to be on the TSIB inorder for them to perform the task?

I had the strage engine noise too but mine was changed under the warranty and the dealership did not need to reproduce based on the way I described it.
Bascially it sounded like something was knocking into the engine for a quick sec then goes away. Once a while when you turn off the engine, it sounded a bit odd too. After having the TSIB done, it all went a way - engine starts/shut down better than before.

Well my dealer is going to be taking the car today and need will need to duplicate the noise inorder to even perform the TSIB. They said it maybe due to the injectors and time chain that is making that noise. I haven't been able to record the noise on video either.

Every dealer is different. Some require replication of the issue, some don't (my dealer didn't). I would highly advise to take a copy of the TSIB in with you to not leave anything to chance just in case you get a tech who doesn't know what he's doing and diagnoses it as something else.
